OnTheMap

I learned of the Census' OnTheMap service which lets you analyze employment at a local level from an area workforce report. Although the service is not quite as intuitive as many Google Maps or Microsoft Live maps, it does provide some useful data. You have a variety of options for report generation. For example, you can create a set of concentric circles, such as this map of Logan, Utah with 1, 2, and 3-mile radius around the city center.

Then you can generate a report for employment data within each of the circles, like this:

The load times are long, but you can export the data to a variety of formats for reuse. Seventeen states are listed as participating partners. Utah is not one of those.

Hi Dave, I thought you might be interested to know that I referenced your work with the Utah Data Group at Wikinomics.

I'd love to get your thoughts on open data and government.
